Hello Mark.
|
Jim J. |
Just time for a quick question(s) ?
|
Mark M. |
go ahead
|
Jim J. |
When
a user gets a new mobile device, what are the options to get the data
from the old device to the new one ? How do you see this working out ?
|

Jim J. |
I wonder if the sales person will help...
|
Mark M. |
Option #1: data sync'd to the cloud (e.g., old device uploads to your site, new device downloads from your site)
|
Mark M. |
Option
#2: SD (e.g., old device has export menu to create XML/JSON/CSV, new
device has import menu, up to user to migrate data physically)
|
Jim J. |
Which means you must have a web site with registration and so forth...
|
Jim J. |
Ah..Sd card.
|
Mark M. |
Well, not necessarily
|
Mark M. |
If the goal is a one-time transfer, for a short period of time, security by obscurity is probably fine
|
Mark M. |
server generates a unique URL
|
Mark M. |
server send URL to old device
|
Mark M. |
oh, wait
|
Mark M. |
well, there's still probably something short of a full-on registration system you can use
|
Mark M. |
but SD card seems to be more common for apps that don't already store their stuff in the cloud
|
Jim J. |
Ok.
Those two are good options. I wonder if the Android and Apple
developers have considered just how they expect this to happen.
|
Mark M. |
Option #3: smoke signals :-)
|
Jim J. |
If
it is a paid app, and the user gets a new device, is there an automatic
way for the user to get those same apps to the new device w/o paying
again ?
|
Mar 18 | 9:50 AM |
Jim J. |
Or is that the plan? :)
|
Mark M. |
pretty much happens automatically, *if* they register the new device with the same Google account as old
|
Mark M. |
no new fees
|
Jim J. |
Excellent. I hope the reps at the stores help the users through the conversion.
|
Mark M. |
yeah, well, wouldn't count on that
|
Mark M. |
store reps aren't necessarily too OS-savvy for any specific OS, except Apple folk @ Genius Bar
|
Mark M. |
some might help, some might not
|
Jim J. |
Have you ever seen a button with a progress dialog type spinning circle image on it for Android ?
|
Mark M. |
no, but with an AnimationDrawable, it should be possible using an ordinary ImageButton
|
Mark M. |
AnimationDrawable is Android's XML-based approach to what an animated GIF might do
|
Jim J. |
Ok. I will look at that. Thanks very much for the time. I love your books. Can't wait until the next Advanced edition is out !!
|
Mark M. |
hopefully in less than a week
