Hello :)
Mark M.
hello, Dominic!
how can I help you today?
Dominic
Tbh just wanted to say that I finished exploring android 1.3, and started writing my own app using the stuff i have learned
Mark M.
cool!
Dominic
The book was great and I feel I have learned a lot
Mark M.
I am glad that you found it to be useful!
Dominic
though I feel that dependency injection explanation in elements of android is much easier to understand I think
8:30 AM
Mark M.
that is not surprising
the focus in *Exploring Android* is less on background and more on the things that you need in order to implement the app
for some topics, that works well
others, like dependency inversion, do not work out as well
that's part of the reason for having the paired books (*Exploring Android* and *Elements of Android Jetpack*), so you can get alternative takes on a topic where needed
Dominic
mmm any advices for first time writing my own app? anything I should pay attention to
Mark M.
that is difficult to answer in the abstract
Dominic
yeah, that was very helpful haha, sometimes i went from exploring android to elements to coroutines or kotlin to understand something
atm I don't have really any specific questions, but I think they will pop up on the way
Mark M.
sure, and between chats and the Android Developer Discuss board, I can try to help!
Dominic
thank you :)
so till next time!
Mark M.
have fun! :-)
8:35 AM
Dominic
actually I realized I have a question about searching on site
when I search for something with parenthesis
like
functionname()
it only shows fuctionname entries
am I doing something wrong?
Mark M.
probably not, but it's a limit of Apache Lucene and/or how I implemented it on the site
I can look into tweaking the indexing algorithm to try to handle this better
but, on the whole, Lucene is going to expect parentheses to mean something in the search itself
such as `foo AND (bar OR goo)`
8:40 AM
Dominic
ohh i understand
thank you :)
8:45 AM
Dominic
and adding some kind of glossary would be cool!
Mark M.
that's interesting -- what sorts of terms would you want in the glossary?
Dominic
tbh atm it is hard to tell because I started to understand the expression on the course of the book
but for example what does it mean when function wraps something
Mark M.
hmmmm...
Dominic
sometimes for an experienced person something might seem easy and obvious, but for readers it might be harder than expected
on the way of writing my own app ill be revisiting all chapters of the book, I can make a list of terms
Mark M.
yes, if you have some suggestions, send them my way
Dominic
I think it should be very similar to this one
Mark M.
OK, that's a good resource -- thanks!
Dominic
i should be the one to say so
another thing, I noticed that on the way of the book
8:50 AM
Dominic
I sometimes forgot the stuff from earlier chapter, it would be cool to mention somewhere that reader should from time to time read previous chapters (repeat stuff)
well thats basically everything I think its neessary other than that book is perfect
Mark M.
for *Elements of Android Jetpack*, I might be able to do that for chapters in the latter half of the book
Dominic
that would be super cool!
Mark M.
to an extent, I did not think that I needed to do that in *Elements of Android Jetpack* -- I had that sort of "prerequisites" section in many of the chapters in *The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development*, but only for topics that would be basically beyond what *Elements of Android Jetpack* covers
Dominic
imo, it would be cool if you had recorded the course for udemy (and also have it uploaded on the site).
Mark M.
that is a ton of work
Dominic
i had done 1 course on udemy and it was at least 3 times worse
Mark M.
and I can barely keep up with the books right now, as I do not have much time to work on them
but, we will see what 2021 brings
Dominic
it would be cool! I tested the "best" udemy android courses, and those do not have the start to your content
anyway, have to go back focus on my own app :) thank you again for everything!
8:55 AM
Mark M.
you are very welcome!
