hello, Paul!
Paul R.
Good morning.
Mark M.
how can I help you today?
Paul R.
Couple of things. First is adding your book (epub) to Google Play Books. Their reader is my preferred epub reader.
Mark M.
and v8.3 isn't working for you, right?
somebody else reported that problem
Paul R.
I have been dong it pretty regularly but 8.3 is not working.
Mark M.
unfortunately, there is nothing much that I can do about it
they do not provide any sort of useful error message
my EPUB has no validation errors
so, I'm at a loss as to how to proceed on it
Paul R.
Well there is something you can do. Just notify us when and if you hear of a solution in your normal mailings.
Mark M.
I will try to remember that
Paul R.
I assume you did not add DRM recently.
Mark M.
also, Play Books imports the PDF just fine
I don't know *how* to add DRM to an EPUB
Paul R.
Yes, I am using the PDF import.
Mark M.
let alone actually do it
Paul R.
OK. I'll let you know if I learn anything after I contact Google.
Second issue:
I find it difficult to navigate your book and am hoping you can help me use it more effectively.

For example, I recently decided to learn more about notifications and services.
I struggled to ind the chapter on Services and the Command Pattern but eventually found it.
I think there is another chapter on Advanced Services or Advanced Notifications but that is eluding me at the moment. Any remedial advice?
Mark M.
the table of contents entry for that chapter would be the first occurrence of the word "service" in the book
there are two chapters on Notifications, back to back, starting at page 1263 of the PDF
there is a chapter entitled "Remote Services and the Binding Pattern", starting on page 3613 of the PDF
Paul R.
What form of the book would be the best starting point? App, PDF or something else.
Mark M.
whatever you are comfortable with, really
when I want to look up stuff in my own book, I use the PDF
Ubuntu's default PDF viewer has full-text search, and the search results show up in a list with page numbers
9:10 AM
Mark M.
lowercase Roman numeral pages are the Table of Contents and the preface; any search hits in there will point to chapters or sections, and therefore are prime candidates
full-text search is much faster in the APK, as I can package a search database for it
Paul R.
I've been using the Mac and an Android tablet (Pixel C). I like the Ubuntu suggestion.
fwiw, I did the search on the tablet for "service" and the first hit was in the preface "Allarm Manager..."
Mark M.
are you using the APK edition on the tablet?
Paul R.
Yes.
Mark M.
that doesn't search the table of contents; I added a to-do item to add that while we were chatting just now
what shows up in the preface are the list of the trails chapters
Paul R.
Ah. that explains it.
9:15 AM
Paul R.
That takes care of my questions. Do you have any for me?
:-)
Mark M.
what is the average air speed velocity of a laden swallow?
Paul R.
4.3 mph.
Mark M.
sounds plausible
Paul R.
The best lies are the ones that are plausible.
According to Dave Barry, in so many words.
Mark M.
beyond that, I don't have any questions for you
if you have additional questions (on the book or on Android), go right ahead
Paul R.
Actually, I need to finish reading what you wrote on services. Then apply that to my app. At that point I will likely be back with more questions. Enjoy.
Mark M.
OK
9:20 AM
Paul R.
Thanks.
